1.0 - Overview of Kompleks Kebajikan Hamidah
Logo of PERYATIM (Pertubuhan Anak-anak Yatim Negeri Sarawak)

Kompleks Kebajikan Hamidah (in English, Hamidah Orphanage Complex), located at Taman Desa Indah 3, Permyjaya, Miri, Sarawak, Malaysia is an orphanage center primarily for Muslim children. In line with its motto which is “Orphans’ Welfare is our Shared Responsibility”, currently there are 92 children under the roof with the assistance and guidance from 16 staffs. Lead by Puan Hajjah Juliyanah binti Abdul Hamid, PERYATIM General Manager, the complex consists of amenities such as separate hostels for boys and girls, dining hall, prayer hall, seminar room, study room, computer room and library and playing fields for children’s convenience.

Under the same management of PERYATIM through Lembaga Kebajikan Yayasan Anak Yatim Sarawak (LKYAS), it has another sister in Kuching called Kompleks Kebajikan Laila Taib. The complex is named after the late Datuk Amar Puan Seri Laila Taib, the late wife of current Sarawak Chief Minister. She also was the Chairperson of PERYATIM since 1993. In addition, PERYATIM will be having another two orphanage complexes in Sibu as well as Bintulu to cater the increasing demand of orphanage placement from Sarawak community. Currently, there are about 400 orphans in Miri and Kuching complexes.

Initially, this orphanage home is located at two of the rented shop lots in Taman Bumiko, Miri. Around January 2008, the center has moved to Permyjaya area where the current location is. This relocation is due to the increase in number of children being taken care of and a need to have a larger space for orphans’ convenience. This relocation can be done primarily because of donation from the public.

Typical annual cost for one orphanage under PERYATIM is at least RM 400,000 depending to its capacity. Currently, the annual cost for both Miri and Kuching branches is about RM 1.4 million. As a whole, PERYATIM receives about RM 30,000 from Sarawak State Government and RM 100,000 from Federal Government. Therefore, it is more than 80% of the fund required comes from public and external bodies. From this fact, the donations from the public, NGOs as well as private and corporate sectors are crucial and significant. And thus, any donation channels to this orphanage complex must be spread among the Malaysian community.

PERYATIM is now focusing to develop an orphanage complex in Sibu. After having predicaments finding the suitable land, eventually, one prominent community leader in Sibu, Temenggong Datuk Wan Hamid Edruce donated his 10-acre land for the development. The total cost of the development will be around RM 6 millions inclusive of bus and furnishing. The Chairman of PERYATIM, Datuk Daud Abdul Rahman who is also a Islamic Religion Minister of Sarawak, said RM 6 millions came from general public, corporate bodies and non-government organizations (NGO). Out of it, RM 5 millions is collected from a fund-raising dinner alone. The capacity of the complex can hold up to 200 children.

2.0 - Mission and Goals

The main vision of this orphanage is ‘to take good care of orphans’ welfare through efficient and visionary management system’. To ensure the welfare and well beings of the orphans are taken care of, the management system of the orphanage must be efficient to ensure all planning and implementation process are executed to fulfill the objectives. Moreover, the management system must be visionary too to nurture to prepare the modules and surroundings for the orphans to face the real world in their future time. Furthermore, there are principles hared among the community within the orphanage which are honesty, sincerity, patience, respectful, love and brotherhood, hardworking and knowledgeable.

In addition of having main vision, the objectives of Kompleks Kebajikan Hamidah are:
1. To nurture and educate Islamic fundamentals and values to make them a pious individuals.
2. To provide educational facilities and guidance to them.
3. To provide complete basic amenities to give bright hope to them in their life.
4. To build their human body and mind to produce healthy, active, discipline and good-behavior individuals.

3.0 - Range of Activities
Currently, there are 92 children living in Kompleks Kebajikan Hamidah ranging from 8 to 17 years old. Out of this number, 40 are male children while another 52 are female children. Their origin comes from many places in Sarawak inclusive of Miri, Limbang, Mukah Bekenu and Lambir.

Typically, they have two session of schooling; one in the Morning, while the other in the Evening. Thus, during the day, most of the time they are at school. Actually, they go to different school inclusive schools in Tudan, Pujut Corner, Lutong, Piasau and Merbau. While, they used to play games such as football and futsal in the evening. Sometimes, my friends from the society go there playing with them. Or, they are simply having a chat with each other. In addition, while having many sponsors and events by outsiders, they themselves giving their hands to the public as an appreciation. For instance, they did cleaning work at Masjid At-Taqwa, Miri on March 15, 2009. The following day they went to Masjid Kampung Luak.

On November 11, 2008, Emart (a shopping center in Permyjaya, Miri) organized a donation program by putting 10 donation boxes around the shopping mall during fasting month. As a result, they managed to collect and donate RM 1113.35 to the orphanage. In return, as an appreciation, the children helped to wrapped the shopping stuffs at the cashier counters on March 16, 2009. Recently, they also have Palestine Roadshow presented by Yayasan Amal Malaysia on January 22, 2009 at the complex. Furthermore, they have the teams of performing tahlil and zikir (Remembrance to God), nasyid (Islamic Songs), dancing as well as pantomime to be presented to public upon requested. Moreover, there are two kind-hearted doctors who are coming in weekly basis. One comes on Wednesday providing health check-ups as well as medicines. While, the other doctor comes on Saturday donating breads, milk and desserts.

4.0 - Specific Project (Tuition)
Last Friday, our team which is six of us together with several friends went to Kompleks Kebajikan Hamidah, Miri for our tuition program as part of our project and more importantly, as our social contribution to Miri and Malaysia community. Our specific objective for this tuition session is to build relationship and trust between them and us as their tutors. This session was a kick-start of the long-learning tuition program which will consists of several of us and our friends from the club and external bodies.

We departed to the complex at around 730 pm and arrived there at around 810 pm. Having Form 5, Form 3 and Year 6 children, our teammates were divided into these respective sub-groupings. I was attached to Year 6 children together with four comrades. At first, we had a short briefing among ourselves to recall our objective being there. We were reminding ourselves that we were there to help orphans by tuition sincerely and not to forget, not to over talk about family and parents as it might hurt their feeling as orphans.

Then, we did the short briefing to the children on the program. After that, we went to our respective sub-group. My sub-group of 10 Year 6 children consists of 4 male children together with 6 female children. There should be one more female student but then she went back to her home due to personal affairs.

My sub-group of Year 6 students

At first, all of us inclusive of tutors and the children introduce ourselves. From this session, we have known that even though they are all Muslims, but, they have different origins in terms of race, location and family background. Among them are Malays, Brunei and Melanau. Also, they are coming from not only Miri but from Kuching, Bintulu, Mukah and Limbang. Then, we did the survey to know what are the topics which they find very hard. Thus, we can focus to facilitate them understanding those topics in the upcoming sessions. I myself will teach them English and I found that they need help in sentence structure, essay writing and the various tenses in grammar. Most of the time, we got to know each other as this was our first meeting inclusive of educational background, hobbies, ambitions as well as personal experiences too. To ensure the effectiveness of this tuition program, we have to win their heart first and thus, we have to show good impression and patience. That is why mild approach is taken for this first session not to burden them but to know them by heart. At the same time, we did stress the point that it is important to study well here as we have many people still love us, have ample amenities provided as well as the sense of national integration as it is the main core value within Malaysia community since independence. We finished at about 10 pm.

This program will not stop just for this course project. With the assistance mainly from Shell and Petronas Engineers as well as financial sponsorship from HIKMAH (one of the non government organization in Sarawak promoting Islamic awareness), we perceive this session as a kick-start program to the upcoming tuition sessions which will be a weekly basis. I volunteer my self to teach them UPSR English every Friday night. May God help us with this program.

Even though, this orphanage is mainly for Muslim children, they are different races and coming from different places. As this orphanage is a multi-racial community which is a good place to nurture the national integration among new generation which is teenagers. However, PERYATIM is planning to allocate 10% to 20% of the placement to non-Muslims to form greater unity, understanding and tolerance among Sarawakians. This announcement is made by Sarawak Chief Minister, Pehin Sri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud during the announcement of the land for PERYATIM orphanage in Sibu. As a Malay idiom says “melentur buluh biarlah dari rebungnya” (simply means, young minds is easier to nurture), to cultivate the sense of national integration, it is best when our target group is still young. In addition, having all poor orphans under one management or location, the national development can be delivered efficiently to help them as through PERYATIM, these children can be developed physically, emotionally, spiritually and intellectually under one roof with the efficient and visionary management system. For the information, this year (2009), there are two students being accepted in Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) to undergo Electrical Engineering course. Therefore, Kompleks Kebajikan Hamidah is a good social system to implement national integration and development since young age.
